FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Estrella Warbirds Museum Youth Program Meeting is Saturday, Sept. 28
Paso Robles, CA – September 19, 2019:
The Estrella Warbirds Museum Youth Program will have its first meeting this school year on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 10:00 am in Thomson Hall at the Museum. Lunch will be provided. The program will provide young people the opportunity to follow their interests and explore career opportunities in aviation and aeronautics. The Estrella Warbirds Museum Program is open to all students in grades 8 through 12, and will meet the third Saturday of each month at the Museum.
Last year, students learned basic aerodynamics and navigation, toured the CAL FIRE Air Attack Base at the Paso Robles Airport, visited the ACI maintenance facility at the San Luis Obispo Airport, and took a field trip to Lemoore Naval Air Station. They were able to climb aboard World War II bombers, the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and B-25 Mitchell when the Collings Foundation’s flying museum visited Paso Robles. Students and their parents experienced the military’s hottest jet fighter/bomber by flying the museum’s F-18 flight simulator. In addition, students received a presentation by HoverShot LLC, a commercial drone manufacturing company that included a demonstration on drone flying, and the opportunity for each student to control drone cameras with a virtual reality headset.
Students are eligible to become a Plane Captain, and get involved as museum docents, in aircraft restoration, and in upkeep of display aircraft. Students who participate in the Plane Captain program may receive credits for community service work.
Brad Eaton, Aviation Youth Program Coordinator, stated, “This is a unique program that is not available to students in other areas.” He continued, “With the demand for trained pilots and airplane mechanics, the introduction of the United States Space Force, and the entrance of private companies like SpaceX into space travel, students have an excellent opportunity to explore career options and follow their dreams.”
